It's basic economics, and the rules of supply and demand. The supply is limited, so when the demand goes up, so does the price. The best we can do as individuals is to reduce our demand. Buy the most fuel efficient vehicle you can, limit trips, combine trips where possible, and carpool.

Gas prices dropped in my area to about $1.90 as the warm winter lasted, and there was a surplus of fuel because nobody was using much to heat their houses. Now it's up to about $2.35 - a 25% jump in about 2 months. When summer and the driving season gets here, it may go back to $3 per gallon again, all because the demand has gone up.

Just steal it. Pump and go without paying is easiest.
