ok get this.

i got a wireless router which works when connected wirelessly

i get a cat5, connect one end to the router the other to the back of the computer, the router lights up.

f**k all connection from the pc to the router!

what do i do?

all i have is "1394 connection" and "wireless connection "under network connections.

and i have no idea what dhcp satic whatever is

When you are connecting the router to the computer, verify that you are not plugging into the 'uplink' port on the router. Also, make sure the network card in the computer is set appropriately - with a static ip if needed, or to use dhcp if that is what you are doing.

Computers can only understand 1 connection type: wireless or wired. you can't have both enable. if you want to connect using your Ethernet cable to your your router you must first disable your wireless on the PC. on win 2000/xp right click my computer-lft click manage-lft click device manager-lft click network adapters- right click on the wireless card and lft click disable....follow the same steps if you want to re-enable wireless....also after doing those steps if you are not connected right away you can force it by placing your mouse on the bottom right corner of the screen near the time you should see an icon of 2 computers right click that icon and lft click repair. good luck

Make sure you enable your Local area network connection. You can find this under network connections. You'll also see a wireless network connection. Disable it.
