They can be, but it takes careful consideration. if interior walls are left the stone, you know that they will conduct heat and cold, albeit slowly. Depending on you climate, you can use this effect to your advantage. In hot climates they keep the house cool in the day, and release the heat at night. They will also conduct the cold in so are not that good for cold climates. if you insulate the walls and finish them with drywall like a normal house, most of this effect can be negated.

Advantages are that, wind won't bother a well built one. properly done, they even hold up to water fairly well, but be sure to have good drainage, standing water will cause problems for any building materials. It will also be low maintenance if done right in the first place. A little tuck-pointing every now and then should be all that is required.

biggest drawback, they are expensive to build, unless of course you do the work yourself and have a free or cheap supply of stone. Labor intensive, so if you hire it done, it will cost more than any average home of the same size. If you keep the house a long time, that cost is offset by the low maintenance.

The positives would be low maintenance, and strong structure. The negatives would be stone tends to be cold and damp depending on the area of the country you live in. If you live in a hot climate, the coolness of the stone may be a huge energy saver, but in the north, you would have to really insulate for the winters

A stone house (or bricks) are more efficient than a frame wooden house because it is much more durable. It will hold up better under bad weather and winds. No matter what kind of house you buy, you need to make sure it is made well. That it's in good condition inside and out.

first of all most stone houses are veneered with stone not made of stone. (in the us). so your walls will still be studded and insulated the same as any other house. the advantages...no painting , strong outside shell, wind and storm resistant... the only down side would be the price...and this could be offset over 50 years by the low upkeep...

They are genereally cooler, nice place to invite snakes. If they are insolated well, then that is great, if not it can make for a hard winter if your in the north. Personally I like them anyways. I almost bought one that was really old, still used an out house and only had a single pipe to the kitchen sink as it's upgrade.
