Smutty is very close to the right answer; original name of JavaScript is Netscape LiveScript; they rename it as Java came about the same time and renaming is beneficial from a marketing POV.

Asking Java vs. JavaScript is like asking Python vs. Perl. The concepts they relate to are very different.

java is a language used for developing large apps. . .but the jscript is for using it on thw web with HTML and other stuff. . .hope this helps. .
