While doing research on typhoons in the Western north Pacific ocean in the 1970's using satellite data, I flew into a super typhoon, Typhoon Wendy, on 8 September 1971. I was an Air Force officer at the time and flew with the hurricane hunters stationed at Anderson AFB at the north end of the island of Guam. We flew into the storm at 700 mb, approximately 10,000 feet in a WC 130 aircraft. As we dropped the dropsonde to measure the central pressure in an eye that was a hundred miles in diameter I was looking at the latest satellite data and comparing it with what we observed from the aircraft. This was a very exciting experiment and we were not concentrating on the turbulence the aircraft was experiencing at the time but rather the gathering of new scientific data for the first time.

I have been through hurricanes many times. Living in Puerto Rico, that is one of the most constant natural disasters. It really isnt a big deal, there is nothing much to do cause there is a lot of rain and wind and no power. You just have to protect your house and other things well and everything will be fine.

On a naval ship in 1978, went through two of them back to back. Many days of dark skies, lots of rain and sea swells coming over the bow. Two of the days, we had to tie ourselves into our racks (beds). Food was cold cuts and water for five days since the cooks couldn't cook safety. I have many photos and memories. I enjoyed it.
