Not sure what they're called, but some websites have random pictures that contain letters/text that need to be entered into a box in order to validate a form entry. Can anyone explain how this "key signature" works and how an amateur like me can integrate a similar system on my website? Are there any scripts/software that I could use?

They are called CAPATCHA. If you can code PHP, it's possible to write one with the gd extension. Some sites simply ask a simple maths question.

There are also pre-built modules that could help, for example JpGraph has a function for this, KittenAuth is designed to drop-in, and so on.

Do some research... weak CAPATCHAs can be defeated, look for one with multiple fonts, good distortion, the more features the better.
