Is anyone truly happy - people who experience all of the spoils of freedom and democracy become enslaved by consumerism, eaten up by self doubt at not having or being enough, forced to beat down other people to become the top of their field, to make the money etc, at the expense of decency, morality and the spirit of giving, and these are the people who are held up as the poster children of freedom and democracy. Happiness is in the little things and the joy of relating to others and that can be found anywhere - not everyone strives for democracy.

Wow, this is quite the ethnocentric question. For the record, the majority of European countries are free democracies. I'm not sure about the Eastern Bloc, but I think they have switched to democracie also (correct me if I'm wrong fellow answerers). Now the second part of my answer - who are you to judge what true happiness is or looks like? I'm sure that there are some individuals in China that question your true happiness - "how can he be truly happy if he always has to wonder where his next meal is coming from?" It is important to note that your ideas of happiness are biased and based on your habitus (or worldview). This doesn't make them wrong or right, but it is important to note that it does mean that you cannot judge other people's happiness because their happiness is also dependent on their habitus.
