The rearrangement reaction of benzil with potassium hydroxide forms benzilic acid which rearranges and gives a product which is α-hydroxy-carboxylic acid.this reaction is called diketone reaction

start pushing electrons. remember they come from a source and go to the most electropositive source they can find. when asking questions like this it's really hard to do without drawing pictures. i'd go see your TA or prof to see this written out for you.
