My favourite fairytale was Konek Gorbunok, by Peter Pavlovich Ershov.
It made its way into my family through an old Russian pen-friend many years ago.

Its the story of three brothers who live with their elderly father, tilling the fields. One day the wheat goes missing, and the brothers keep watch on the store to catch the thief. Only the youngest brother, john, manages to stay awake and catch the 'thief' which is actually a magical horse. She bears two steeds and a little donkey, the donkey is also magical, and leads john on a magical journey, until the end of the book, where he is crowned Tzar of Russia. (A very bad synopsis i know)

WIthout a doubt C.S. Lewis - .The Lion, The WItch and The Wardrobe.

I also remember reading a book called the Gauntlet about a young boy in boarding school who found a gauntley and when he put it on he changed place with a young boy from medievil days for the next day. The boys would leave notes under the pillow so that they knew what to do the next day.

But nothing was better than The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton
What Katie Did Next - Can't remember the author
Roald Dahl stories about the girl and her bird (Matilda I think, and the bird is really naughty and makes a lot of mess!)
The Hobbit
Anything that came in the mobile library once a week! I hope they still have those for kids these days, I loved it!

This has to be anything from either Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton, absolutely fantastic and imaginative writers that i could still read as an adult. The BFG, The Faraway Tree, The Wishing Chair and many more, brilliant. Still have one Enid Blyton book from my childhood.
