Wikipedia is a multilingual, Web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world. With rare exceptions, its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has rapidly grown into the largest reference Web site on the Internet.

Wikipedia is just like an encyclopedia except that it's internet users and people who know anything about anything putting the information up there. It's a very good online encyclopedia with lots of information on what ever you want to find out more about.

NO! DEAR GOD! IT IS NOT THE "SAME" AS AN ENCYCLOPEDIA!!!

It is entirely written by (shudder) people just like you and me. And being "updated" and "edited" all the time.

It is perfectly O.K. to use for GENERAL REFERENCE, like a quick look-up when you see a term online that you aren't familiar with....something current in the news or a new buzzword.

But for FACTS check real reference sources. Like Britannica or the DICTIONARY.

And I'm pretty sure that Wikipedia has a "self-explanation" of what it is. Have you looked it up yet? Google it.

It is an on-line encyclopedia but it has some drawbacks. Anyone can add info to the site so there is some doubt as to its accuracy. I do not think that most schools will accept it as a source.

No- it is not the same. Anyone can post anything- it does not have to be valid or based upon fact.

It is not an academic resource. If students use in class papers their work is discounted.
