My research tells me the lyrics were by Tolkien, but I can't find them anywhere in the book, nor any clear indication of where they are to be found. Is that song from the Lord of the Rings? the Silmarillion? the other books Christopher published later?

You sure Buffy? another wiki article led me to believe he wrote only the tune, but the words were Tolkien's.

Sorry to jump ship Buffy, but I scanned through all of the Songs/Poems in my books, and in the fellowship (dern it why would I start from the back, ugh) there is a section in the "three is company" chapter when the second black rider is scared off by Gildor and his group.

"Bilbo Baggins had made the words, to a tune that was as old as the hills, and taught it to Frodo as they walked in the lanes of the Water-Valley and talked about Adventure."

In the third verse

"Home is behind, the world ahead, and there are many paths to tread through shadows to the edge of night, until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, we'll wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread. And then to bed! And then to bed!"
Pippin's Song
"Home is behind, the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow, to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall Fade
All shall fade"

According to those collaborating with B. Boyd, his version was original due to changes in the lyrics. So technically this is a different song, though only a few words and phrases were changed. But then again, many of Tolkien's phrases had to be changed in order to reach audiences, so it's a point a view I suppose.

But that is where the text would be found. (phew, how was that?!)

From where come the lyrics of Pippin's song at Denethor's court?

Although Billy Boyd composed and sang the song, he didn't write the lyrics. The words come from a song when the hobbits were searching for a land to live in aka the shire. It was made by pippins ancestors

Billy Boyd wrote that song.

from wikipedia.org:
He wrote and sang a song in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King called Edge of Night.
