My wife thought she wasn't going to make it until they gave her a light epidural, so it can be very painful

Honestly, I've had 2 children one with pain meds and one without. The only part I found to be extremely painful is the contractions. By the time you actually get to the birth you're so sick of the pain you just push your way through it and the baby is born.
Please don't worry, otherwise you'll stress about this for your entire pregnancy.
Just make sure you time your contractions before getting to the hospital. You don't want to get there too early, but if you get there too late you cannot recieve pain meds. I'm not sure If you're planning on getting pain meds but I went natural the first time and the second I went with the epidural.
The first time was H*ll, but the second with the epidural was nothing. I couldn't even feel those painful contractions, however It made me too numb so it was harder to push the baby out.
If I have another I think i'll try to go natural again, the birth was much easier that way.
Hope this helps.

I'm not going to lie to you: yes it hurts
the severity of the pain can vary from woman to woman and it depends on wether you need to be induced or not
with an induced labor the contractions are much stronger, and therefore more painful than a labor that progresses on it's own
there are several ways to manage the pain though. Laying on your side instead of your back worked wonders for me. My sister sat on a "birthing ball" for her entire labor and said her contractions weren't too bad when she rocked on the ball. I know walking can help labor progress, and during a contraction it helps to hold on to someone (fingers interlaced behind their neck works) and sway back and forth. Music can help take your mind off of the pain as well. (Music worked like a charm when I got my tattoo!) There are also pain medications as well. Epiduarals are nice. If you're scared of needles, tell them you DON'T want to see it. I've had that done three times, and I've never seen the needle, and I never felt a thing. That will usually make the pain go completely away. I mean that's what they do for c-sections now. So you can't feel a THING.
Yes, it hurts, but if it's something you decide you can't deal with let the doctor know! I never had any side effects from my epiduarals. There are lots of things to do to ease the pain, if you want a "drug free" delivery. You just have to do what works for you.
Best of Luck! It's not so bad! If it was unbearable, we'd have gone extinct many many many years ago!

I wouldn't want anyone to lie to me so I am not going to lie to you. Labor hurts worse than anything you could ever possibly imagine. It's like your world is made of glass and someone comes along and smashes it. You cannot hear, see, or speak during the pain. You feel as though you are drowning in it. BUT, you can get through it. Women have been doing this for centuries long before the time of epidurals. Back in the old days they just gave you a stick to bite on. Imagine that LOL! Just remember to breathe. Breathing is the key to it all. And just for the record, there is NO SHAME in an epidural. Pay no attention to people who tell you that they did it natural as though that makes them a better mother for it. That's them, and this is you. Your baby will not care whether you suffered for her or not. This is your decision to make and you know your own threshold to pain.

It wasnt for me, I gave birht twice without any pain releif, I only found it slightly uncomfortable, and it all happened very quickly too.......
I was induced with my first son, this is where they break your waters and insert a drip in your hand to speed labour up, people had told me all sorts of horror stories, that it was so painful but I didnt think so I could feel the contractions but I have a high pain threshhold, I also went from one stage of labour very quickly to the next like I was 4cm dilated then within 5mins I was 10cm fully dilated then he was born.....
My second son came the exact date he was due I got to the hospital at 19-50pm and he was born at 21-20pm lol lucky I got there on time .....
Dont worry about your labour everyone is different and you will be fine, if you want pain relief then have it, you will know yuorself your body will tell you, its no big deal really dont listen to others horror stories, take it as it comes you will be fine good luck to you and look forward to seeing your baby its all worth it and its a pain you will forget if you do find it painful..........

There is a reason it is called Labor. It's hard work and yes, it's painful. There are ways you can help yourself through it tho. First of all, take the birth classes. They will teach you lots of things to help get past the pain. There's also the option of taking drugs during labor. Believe me though, when the baby comes out, it will be like they put fairy dust over you and you won't remember the pain, you'll just be focused on that sweet baby. Good luck!!!

I'm a real wimp when it comes to pain, so believe me when I say If I can do it you can do it. It felt like real strong menstrual cramps for me. You never know you could have a great delivery and have little pain, it may go quick for you. Everyone is different. Just think of the beautiful baby you are going to have after it's all done and that will get you through it fine. Walk lots and taking showers helped for my labor to go by quicker. Good luck and when the day comes don't worry. Enjoy

Sure, when you're in the moment. That's what the epidural is for. You may not need it, but it's nice to know it's there. After the baby comes though, you do forget about the pain, because every single second is worth it when you're looking into your baby's eyes.

Yes it is. I will tell you about my experience. I have had 3 babies naturally now with no drugs, and It was painful the whole way through, but it didnt get really really bad until towardst he end and by then it was almost all over with. Try not to worry about it too much. When the time comes, everything will just happen and it will be over with and you'll have your baby :)

First, Congrats on the Upcoming Event! Second, I'm a Father & Grandfather. I don't know what the pain is? I just can speak from what I saw in the Eyes of their Mother? And my Daughter. Anything , that happens to you? Is nothing to the Joy, that God bestows on you afterward. You are gonna feel, so much Pride, Joy, Happiness? That it's all gonna be a faint memory. Give The Father, a High-Five from all of us! God Bless all of you! I'm on Profile. Shout at me, when the time comes! I mean it!

The things that I remember hurting the worse were the iv and all of the stuff that the Dr's had me do.
Sure, the contractions hurt, but there are ways to avoid that. Go right now and sign up for childbirth classes. They will explain everything to you, including all pain control measures available.
Don't stress about it, this will make you tense, and you actually need to be relaxed.
Good luck!
