Hi,
I'd like to get a small lawn equipment battery to use for starting my tecumseh wood chipper. I bought it from a lady who's husband had died and she didn't know anything about it. No operators manual and both the battery connector leads are colored red. Is there a way I can tell which lead is positive and the other negative?

The postive should lead to some type of starter. The negative needs to lead to a ground. look around. maybe bolted to the frame.

can you see the starter? ....the lead from the starter go,s to your start switch.....then to your positive terminal........your negative is usually connected to the engine block........you must trace your wiring....the other red wire may be a charge wire.....or a kill wire....or a safety switch wire......you must trace them to the source.......that,s the only way to know ,without a manual....if in doubt....take it to your nearest power equipment dealer...or your nearest rental outlet....hope this help,s...good luck.
