Well, knowing a few things would help in giving you a better answer:
* do you speak German? If not - get to the books fast.
* do you have a local work permit? If not, that's what you need to resolve fast.
No company will hire you simply because you're American. On the other hand, there are plenty of companies in Germany that will hire non-Germans if they have the necessary skills and permits.
Germany is the world's third largest economy (after the US and Japan), and one of the richest places on this planet. So pretty much any company with a global focus will be there, American or not. There are literally thousands of American companies hiring on the German market. From the large ones (Ford, GM/Opel, Dow, USX, Procter & Gamble, Colgate, Boeing, Microsoft, 3M, Citibank, Price WaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, Deloitte & Touche, just to name a few ...), to the medium and small ones you've never heard of ("Phoenix Consulting" in Munich?). And there are tens of thousands of German and non-German companies that hire people. Discrimination because of national origin is not only illegal according to German employment law, it is also almost unheard of.
The key to success is to get the legal issue resolved (i.e. have a work permit), and present a skill package "You" that companies will find attractive and beneficial. That's what you need to work on. And part of that is learning the language.
