Sparta (Sparti) is not on an island, but in Peloponnese, part of the Greek mainland. (Even it is cut off from the mainland by the Corinth Canal, it is still considered to be mainland.)
Anyway, Sparta is a town 217 km south-west of Athens.
You can't really see anything of its former glory, Sparta of today is a modern town.

In the Peloponnese, south Greece. About 3 hours from Athens.
By the way it is not an island and it is not even near the sea.
