Values are the framework of your behavior as you walk through life. They are the guidelines you use when you encounter difficult situations. When the clerk at the store gives you too much change, your values determine whether you walk away with it, or return it. They could be central in helping your avoid pitfalls which could change your life and get you into a lot of trouble.

When choosing a profession, values make a lot of difference. We tend to work at what is important to us in the long run. So, people who love children and are concerned about their well-being might teach or do social work; whereas, someone who is concerned about the health of others might enter the health-care field. It would certainly be difficult for someone to work at something that is counter to their values, like a person who is deeply religious becoming a bartender.
