The pentacle is a symbol of protection, it is also used to represent the elements of earth air fire water & spirit. Depending upon the direction that it is drawn (deosil or widdershins) and from which point you start, it can be used to conjure or banish. It is used in tradtional elemental invocations in the wiccan ritual. The lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram is a common "uncrossing" ritual that is done through visualization of the pentegram. The pentacle, when worn as jewelry can also show the degree of elevation for the witch. (1st degree is right side up, 2nd degree is upside down and 3rd degree is rightside up topped with a triangle.)

The pentacle's five points represent the four directions;North,
South,West andEast.
The four directions also corresponde to the four elements;North=Earth,South=Fire,West=Water.
The fifth and topmost point representing Spirit.
When the pentacle is enclosed by a ring/circle it is known as the circle of protection.
The space in the centre of the pentacle is of great power.

In Wiccan terms, I believe it corresponds to the meeting of the five elements. These include, in no particular order....Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and Spirit. It is also said to correspond to the Human body for aesthetic reasons. It is also widely believed to be protective when a circle encloses it.

The pentacle goes back in history. Salas, the Roman Goddess of health, happiness and prosperity, used this symbol as a symbol of good luck, and her symbol on rings was exchanged at New Year with family and friends for good luck in the new year.
The Irish used this pre-Christianity, to symbolize the 5 kings of Ireland, united at the center by Tara.
It seems to represent much in the idea of unity and giving us those things we need. Wicca uses it in pretty much the same manner. We use it for protection, evoking it in our rituals to banish and cleanse an area, and to evoke safety and security as we build sacred space. We use it to protect our homes and family, ensuring health, happiness and prosperity.
It also symbolizes unity, as the elements and then ourself, making the 5 points. We work with the elements, binding ourself to their energies, working for change. I am not one of those "spirit" people, rather I see the 5th point as myself... not spirit. We are the 5th ingredient in the process... earth, air, fire, water and ourself.
So, for me at least, it is a symbol of protection, a symbol of change and a symbol of self empowerment.

It can mean several things but the easiet way to think of it is as the points of a compass North, East, South, West and the fifth point is the point of souls or spirit. That which binds everything together. It's used for all sorts of reasons, summoning, protection, simple spells, complex spells, all sorts really because it ecompasses everything. Each compass point is attributed different aspects according to who's using it. Fire, Earth, Air and Water sort of thing

"In the science of magic the pentalpha is called the holy and Mysterious pentagram. ...the pentagram in the star of Magians; ...by virtue of the number five, it has great command over evil spirits because of its five double triangles and its five acute angles within and its five obtuse angles without, so that this interior pentangle contains in it many great mysteries." (Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, The pentagram or pentacle. It has five points and the number "5" has always been regarded as mystical and magical, yet essentially "human".
We have five fingers/toes on each limb extremity.
We commonly note five senses - sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.
We perceive five stages or initiations in our lives - eg. birth, adolescence, coitus, parenthood and death.
In Christianity, five were the wounds of Christ on the cross.
There are five pillars of the Muslim faith and five daily times of prayer.
Five were the virtues of the medieval knight - generosity, courtesy, chastity, chivalry and piety as symbolised in the pentagram device of Sir Gawain.
The Wiccan Kiss is Fivefold - feet, knees, womb, breasts, lips - Blessed be.
A circle around a pentagram contains and protects.
The circle symbolises eternity and infinity, the cycles of life and nature.
The circled pentagram is the passive form implying spiritual containment of the magic circle, in keeping with the traditional secrecy of witchcraft, and the personal, individual nature of the pagan religious path, of its non-proselytising character.
more articles from livingstonemusic.net..... The pentagram has long been believed to be a potent protection against evil, a symbol of conflict that shields the wearer and the home.
The pentagram has five spiked wards and a womb shaped defensive, protective pentagon at the centre.
There are five elements, four of matter (earth, air, fire and water) and THE quintessential - spirit. These may be arrayed around the pentagrams points.
The word "quintessential" derives from this fifth element - the spirit.
Tracing a path around the pentagram, the elements are placed in order of density - spirit (or aether). fire, air, water, earth. Earth and fire are basal, fixed; air and water are free, flowing.
Single point upwards signifies the spirit ruling matter (mind ruling limbs); is a symbol of rightness. With two points up and one (spirit) downwards, subservient, the emphasis is on the carnal nature of Man.
A pentagram without a surrounding circle is the active form symbolising an outgoing of oneself, prepared for conflict, aware, active.

It is a symbol of balance and protection. I see it as a symbol of the interconnectedness of Nature (the four elements) and the Divine Spirit. It can also serve as a symbol of the faith, useful for identifying kindred souls, even if it has been borrowed by popular subculture.
