its a combination of things...the food it was made from, and the stuff ur body breaks the food down with (hydrochloric acid) the stuff to neutralize the acid, bile, and other secretions

This is a tricky one!

Basically it relay depends on what the 'Stool' is made of i.e. Plastic & Metal are basically odourless. Whereas 'Pine' smells totaly different to 'Oak'.

However if you are talking 'S**t' there is a well proven Smell Identification Control Chart which is based on age.

5 yrs to 25 yrs : smells of Macdonalds
25yrs to 50 yrs : smells of Tesco ready Meals.
50yrs to 70 yrs : smells of Sprouts & Eggs
70 yrs onwards : smells of Death!

It is apparently skatole (3-methylindole) which is a breakdown product from haemoglobin.

Apparently this compound is used in small amounts to flavour vanilla ice cream!
