I am planning to work in Washington D.C. with one of the international organisations there. My friends living in the US tell me that DC has a very high crime rate plus is a very expensive place to live in. Am also very worried about facing racism in public and at the workplace.

(Please save me the smart alec comments .. would be travelling outside my country for the very first time in my life and would have no support structure whatsoever in Washington D.C..... so just very apprehensive.. )

How do I ally these fears ?

D.C. itself sucks, yeah. But there are nice suburbs surrounding the city, so you have that option. As for racism, don't worry about it. Racial discrimination is unlawful in the workplace, and being located in the nation's capitol, they wouldn't dare. In public, well, that is a risk, but most people today never experience it.

I hope this helps, and if you decide to come to America, good luck.
