Buy "British English A to Zed" by Norman W. Schur,published by Harpers Perennial. You can buy it on Amazon.com or at BBC.com. It's very funny and informative. Even has a section about cricket rules and terms. Well worth the cover price. I bought it before my trip to England, and it was very helpful.

I would recommend Barnes and Nobles, Borders, Amazon, Ebay, you could probabl;y even download one for free on Limewire or iMesh. If you type in "Translation of british words and phrases for an american" in google you'll probably get what you're looking for.

try anything by charles dickens or emily bronte.
or shakespear as a last resort.
rent the movie "bedknobs & broomsticks" you couldn't get more british than that.
