POWER: GORE MANSION USES 20X AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD; CONSUMPTION INCREASE AFTER 'TRUTH'
Mon Feb 26 2007 17:16:14 ET

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization committed to achieving a freer, more prosperous Tennessee through free market policy solutions, issued a press release late Monday:

Last night, Al Gore's global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore's mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh-more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh-guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore's average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore's extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore's mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

"As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

It's time to squash the Al Gore lie machine. After that report on his house came out, his press secretary announced that Al Gore participates in the TN Green Power Switch and was installing solar panels. Both are supicious. Why is he just now installing solar panels on this house? Also the Tennessee program to convert over to green electricity is not on-line or is in limited capacity. No one in Tennessee can purchase or switch to this green electricity. One buys a kilowatt block of electricity at $4.50 each and then TVA uses that money to fund windmills that will go on the grid and is distributed through out the state evenly. There is no way that Al Gore can be getting this electricity all to himself.
Not to mention that 5 months ago the papers here in Tennessee said that more money was coming in for these windmills than they could ever build them, mostly because of the lack of skilled contractors.

I've heard about that. He could be an elitist but what I also heard comes from this report:
http://www.myfoxdc.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=2514252&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.11.1
It says:

"Kreider [Gore's Spokeswoman] said the 60- to 70-year-old house is undergoing renovations to add solar panels to reduce consumption off the power grid, and energy-efficient windows have been installed. The home also uses "compact" fluorescent light bulbs and other energy-saving technology, the Gores drive hybrids and participate in two programs that indirectly reduce carbon emissions.
One is through the local power company — the massive Tennessee Valley Authority — which runs the Green Power Switch program that uses some renewable energy like wind and solar power. The second is through a so-called carbon credit program, in which the Gores pay money to invest in a third party to reduce one ton of carbon emissions for every ton of carbon the Gores emit.
Asked to explain how the Gores use the amount of electricity they do, Kreider said they have a large family and often host guests. Both Al and Tipper Gore also have home offices. And she noted that much of Al Gore's time is spent trying to bring about awareness to the problem of global warming, which as a byproduct uses carbon-emitting power.
She noted that Gore's two companies, Current TV and Generation Investment Management — which supported the documentary film and book efforts — donated profits to global warming educational efforts."

Despite owning a mansion, Gore is making an effort to fight global warming. I don't know about him but, for me, I believe that it is possible to maintain the environment AND maintain our lifestyle. This is why I don't just believe in conserving but also ALTERNATIVE ENERGY like solar power that Gore is using. I think we have to do WHATEVER we can to help the environment or it can take away our lifestyle.

Yes but most of us exceed the national average. Sure he might be a hypocrite but he has to get the message out someway or another. He also finds other ways to reduce the amount he has sent out. Just because he is a hypocrite does not take away form the fact of global warming? This is just another attempt from the right to shut us up so they can go about there wasteful money making ways. Martin Luther King is sometimes believed to be a drug addict but does that take away from his message? I’ve never been a fan of gore in the fist place he has some skeletons in his past I dislike. But I support his attempt to get the word out. And it shouldn’t be sullied by political mumbo jumbo.

Any effort, even a noble one like Gore is undertaking, will expend energy and, consequently, release pollutants into the air. The point here though is...is it worth it? Is it worth it for Gore to raise worldwide awareness of the climatic changes that are right now occuring? Is it worth it to start doing something about global warming before it's too late?

I think it is.

The Gorians can talk all they want. No way to get around this one. Gore is a hypocritre, pure and simple. He certainly does not attempt to lead by example. But, he is good at telling everyone else what to do.

The report is of course one sided, it may not even be accurate. I don't know much about Gore but it's safe to say he will live in a large house, travel extensively and produce far more greenhouse gases then the average person.

What the report doesn't mention are the steps Gore is taking to offset his carbon emmissions and I would guess that the reality is that Gore is at least Carbon Neutral and probably Carbon Negative. It would be political suicide for him not to be.

Whether you agree or disagree with him you can't judge him without a fair trial and this means looking at all the evidence.
