I can't open an MPEG file in either; Media Player, I get a "problem with your sound card" error, even though I have downloaded the latest driver for my 5.1 system. Nor can I open it in the Movie Maker, I just get a "codec not installed" error. What Bl***y codec?
I have run a directx diagnostic, (just in case), and it is all fine. So now I'm at a complete loss, and any help would be really appreciated.

A good link where you can get winrar is: http://bit.ly/1t6dcCg

You can use winrar to unzip zip file and loads of other formats. A few more programs you can use are 7zip or winzip but I still beleive winrar is the best choice. They work pretty much in the same way: you can compress or decompress files easily with a right-click.

The big advantages of Winrar are: it's free (it's available under a trial version that never expires) and can open all the formats: .zip, .rar, .7z / 7zip, .iso, .tar, .jar etc.

That's why I strongly recommend winrar.

Try Ace Mega Codecs Pak from the site below. It's freeware so it will cost you nothing and has all the codecs you will ever need.

Rajure speaks the truth. VLC for teh win.

Also open your CD/DVD... right click the mpeg.... copy... then paste it on to your desktop. Sometimes there is less pressure on the player when it plays from the harddrive compared to a disk.
