8+-4 = 8+(-4) = 8-4 = 4

In general, the number with the bigger magnitude(without bothering about the sign) gets to retain its sign in the answer.

In the above case, the 8 is bigger than 4 and the result retains that positive sign.

In this case: 8 + -12, the answer is -4 as 12 is bigger.
If it was -12 + 8, same thing.. Take the difference (signs are different) 12 is bigger, and the result is -4.

And always remember that 8+-10 or 210+-4548 is the same as 8-10 or 210-4548 and so on...

And that's about as simple or not too mathematical I can make it.
Hope that helped.

No, you're wrong. The plus sign here is meaningless. Once you get rid of it, you have 8 minus 4, and you have known the answer to that since first grade.

Now you might have a problem if the question were -8 plus 4, in which case your answer would be correct. The larger number in absolute terms carries the weight. Think distance from zero.

no, the answer to this would be +4

the trick while assigning a + or - sign is to keep in mind the magnitude of the number... let us consider your example ; you see 8>4 therefore after subtracting put the sign of the greater number(8 in this case).

positive # + negative # can go up or down... to understand this consider the example:8+ -10 = -2 this is because the value 10> 8 therefore you subtract and put the sign of the greater number.

keep in mind that always "MAGNITUDE" of the number decides the sign for the resulting number.

It depends on which of the numbers (without the sign) is larger...

8 + (-4)

8 is bigger than 4, so the answer is 4, not -4.
-------
If you had (-8) + 4, then it would be -4 because the 8 is bigger than the 4.

whatever no. has more weight will carry the value attached. say if your no. was -8 and +4. Adding them would make it:

(-8) +(+4)= -4

but since the value of 8 (more weight) is +ve compared to 4, it will carry that,

(+8) + (-4) this will become : 8-4 which is equals to +4.

This is called : BODMAS as a part of order of operations in mathematics.

you gave 8 + 4 = - 4

- - - - - - - -

In order to get - 4 as a answer you must have a - 8

- 8 + 4 = - 4

- 4 = - 4

- - - - - - - - - - s-

it depends
case 1: if the +ve # is larger than the -ve #, the total will go UP
case 2: if the +ve # is less than the -ve #, then total will go DOWN

your question involves case 1 where +ve # > -ve #
so the answer should be +4

You are right!
"Like" signs, when multiplied, yield + (i.e., plus)
"Opposite" signs, when multiplied, yield - (i.e., minus)
E.g., plus into plus = +
minus into minus = +
plus into minus = -
minus into plus = -
Further doubts? Feel free to ask. (Note "into" i.e., multiplication sign, in computers text, is generally, indicated by * A less common method, adopted locally in some places, is #)

+ve and -ve = -ve
-ve and +ve=-ve
+ve and +ve=+ve
-ve and -ve = +ve

your right!
when its addition or subtraction first look at the sign if its+ve and -ve or -ve and +ve you subtract the number and put the sign of the bigger number!
like
-6 + +3= -3
same applies when
+ve and +ve
-ve and -ve

+6 + +6= +12

and while multiplying or dividing
we use this
+ve and -ve = -ve
-ve and +ve=-ve
+ve and +ve=+ve
-ve and -ve = +ve
