Yes and no. As long as you have the piece with which you are starting in the correct position then you should be okay but if your piece is not positioned correctly at the start then you will never succeed.

Good luck solving it! I spent an entire weekend at a Mensa convention working on one with a team of 3 others and we barely got it solved by the end of the weekend.

It matters to a certain extent - if you start with the wrong peice in the wrong place, it is doomed to fail. But, there isn't a set 'right' peice to start with.

Good luck to you, I've had my bedlam cube for 14 months now and have yet to solve it! I knew it'd be tricky when I got it, but I never imagined it'd be this hard!
