The most completely accomplished in all areas of guitar music to me is Joe Satriani. He taught alot of the current guitar gods! Such as Kirk Hammett of Metallica. He just isn't as well known as others. Paul Gilbert is all about precision and speed, his style is not as appealing. Jason Becker was one of the best until his unfortunate illness. I loved him and Marty F. at one time but I like George Lynch who is highly underrated. Carlos Santana is forever awesome and smooth. I can really appreciate his tonal quality because it invades your being! I almost forgot to mention Reb Beach and Vito Bratta both excellent guitar players which people tend to forget! By the way has anyone heard of Vito lately?

I agree with just about every post!

OF course, to hone down your selection, you would have to specify the styles of playing, etc..

Like Jazz Guitar, it could be argued that Earl Klugh, Joe Pass, Robert Conti.

Best Bass Guitar Player ever?
I would say that it is hands down, Victor Wooten, but some prefer the more smooth sound of Marcus Miller

Best Classical Guitar?
OF course, Andres Segovia started it all, and now, his Heir Apparent, Christopher Parkening is arguably one of the best.

Best Rock guitar?
I've always been spellbound by Zak Wylde's (of Black Label Society) almost over-comfortability with the guitar - He makes it seem like a child's toy!
All the others listed here, of course, Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Tommy Emmanuel is an unusual prodigy - like he was born with a guitar or something!

Blues?
There's Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy (reincarnation of Hendrix) Stevie Ray Vaughn

Ukelele:
Steve Martin, of Course...

Banjo;
Earl Scruggs

Mandolin:
Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek) Stunning!

Best technical guitarist group?
California Guitar Trio

Best country & Western?
Some would say Roy Clark. Who was an incredible flat-picker and all around musician...
Glen Campbell also comes to mind. Most people do not know his contribution to the guitar, as he was used as fill-in for many, many albums - a fantastic guitarist.

best Folk guitarist?
James Taylor: Has some of the most complex chords andchord progressions I've ever tried to play.

You people have GOT TO BE CRAZY IN THE HEAD!!

Jason Becker, no hands down is the greatest person to ever pick up a guitar. He was so ahead of his time. I have not seen ANYONE, even the classic shredders come close to his dexterity, speed, or arpeggio ability. Because his time as a shredder was so short lived, many do not know about him.

All I can say is, lick this!

His life is truly a metaphor to our humanity.

To me it`s Jimmy Page who basically changed the sound of music in the 70`s, Randy Rhoads who helped to shape the guitar sound in the 80`s his playing mixed heavy metal and classical styles, he applied alot of classical scales to his solos making them very fast but accurate, Alex Lifeson of Rush who is an all around excellent guitarist

Technical playing, I would have to go with Eric Johnson, the guy is really something else.

Listening wise though, someone bluesy like Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, or Stevie Ray Vaughan. I think its because of their tone. You just don't hear that specific tone except in the blues.

Jeff Beck by far is one of the best guitarists.
Then it has to be Santana
followed by Paul Gilbert.

Growing up, my favorite was Ace Frehley of Kiss. But truthfully, my favorites are Brian Setzer, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs), and Eddie Van Halen.

Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom. He is by far the best guitarist out there that I've heard. Listen to any of his solos they're masterpieces.
