One thing the Check Engine light does not monitor is oil level. Adding oil will not put it out.
If your getting a knock or a miss at high speeds that is probably what is triggering the light to come on. It could be the knock sensor detecting the knock or if it is a misfire you could be getting a misfire code - or about a hundred other possibilities. You need to have the cars Powertrain Control Module scanned. There are two ways to go about doing this.
Some parts stores offer a free "Code Reading" where they simply plug in a cheap tool into your PCM that reads off what of the many hundreds of fault codes are stored in it. The problem with just reading the codes is they are only the symptom, not the problem. The code, contrary to popular myth around here, DO NOT tell you what to fix, only where to start looking for the problem. Parts store guys are not qualified to do that.
My suggestion would be to go to a mechanic who is going to charge you money for a diagnostic. How much depends on the mechanic but since we seem to have a real drivability issue here a simple code reading ain't gonna cut it.

again another person who doesn't state year make and model of the car !!!!!
you will get fuzzy answers this way.
if you state what car you have then maybe an 'expert' may stumble across your question.
and whats the point of me giving you a link for say Toyota when you have a Ford ?
anyway
bridge the relevant pins on the diagnostics plug and count the blinks of the 'check engine light'
then look up the codes.
take it from there.
good luck

you could want a clean engine. ascertain the oil factor that the oil ordinary comes on with engine no longer operating. it stands out as the oil pump is shot notwithstanding the knocking shows harm has already been performed to the engine.

it might be an EGR or knock sensor issue. Take it to a reliable mechanic and have the trouble codes diagnosed

Goto your local auto store and get your computer scanned with the OBDII scanner, then you will know what codes you have and what needs to be fixed.
