It illegal and a breach of a persons Human Rights to have there name displayed in public without there permission and in a way that is defamation of character.
If i was your friend i would contact the owners of the club and inform them of this and also inform them that he is seeking legal advice on the matter also that he insists that the member of staff be reprimanded.
He should also point out that someone, maybe even this member of staff has mounted a vicious hate campaign against him and that unless the company investigates the matter thoroughly and the matter is brought to a satisfactory conclusion and any evidence supporting any claims of wrong doing is presented in the clubs defence of there actions against him he will be instructing his solicitor to take the matter up on his behalf.
Or your friend can consult a solicitor, usually the first initial consultation is free and have have them send off a letter on his behalf for about twenty or so pounds.
This matter needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency because the longer your friend leaves it the weaker his legal rights will become. It's no defence in a court of law to say i was going to deal with the matter sooner but?
All the best,
BEANS

I would say it was illegal to display somebodies name in this way. The Bar manager and owners/proprietors of the club could lay themselves open to charges of defamation of character unless they have absolute proof of their accusations which does not immediately seem to be the case. The member of staff deserves a disciplinary at least and possibly dismissal.

Buddy ought look at it as a great way to meet women... being an "official" Bad Boy and all, but seriously, it is obvious the manager has a handle on the facts at least... and there is always a slander charge depending on local laws... so for now i'll stick to the girl-meeting idea for now.

i know we used to do it because someone could be barred from any premises; however, it was always put in an area where the general public/only the staff could see it as otherwise it could be interpreted as harrassmaent.

No, unless a person is blacklisted by a competant authority, such acts are not permissible.
