What type fertilizer do I use for artichokes?

Artichokes require 3 to 4 applications of a balanced fertilizer per year. You'll also need to apply composted manure or compost every year early in the season to help retain the nutrients you apply and to help build and protect their root system. The manure/compost can be rototilled in or placed around the area where the artichokes will eventually be planted.

Yearly fertilization schedule:

Winter: Apply manure/compost at recommended rates on bag

Before Planting: Apply (at recommended rates) a balanced fertilizer such as a 15-15-15 or 10-10-10.

6 to 8 Weeks after planting: Same fertilizer as previously mentioned

Early Spring: Same fertilizer as previously mentioned

What you should also consider is to apply a beneficial fungus called: Mycorrhizae. Artichokes respond favorably to this fungus and it helps by helping in the establishment, growth and yields.

I've seen remarkable responses to the application of Mycorrhizae and recommend it to anyone who gardens. It's very safe to animals, humans, fish and plants. It can be found in some fertilizers, potting mixes or by itself over the internet.

IF you have any further questions, please feel free to write me. I'd be more than happy to supply you with any other information.

Good luck with the 'chokes! Hope this was of some help to you!

None. Use a good soil and sprinkle a couple tablespoons of epsom salt around the base of the plant every couple of weeks right before watering. The box label usually tells you how much to use and when - but that's the best thing you can do for your edible plants.
