The answer to this is simple he is a massively overrated player who plays very well in 1 out of 7 or 8 games. True he does show flashes of brilliance and at times his skill is awesome.
But England's saviour????????????
I think not. England play better when he's not on the pitch. I think he needs to be left out of a few starting lineups - he doesn't look like he's hungry anymore, it seems that he expects to be the first player on everybodies team sheet.
I think that the press and Steve McClaren need to remove their manhoods from Rooney's backside and allow him to develop.
He has great potential but as yet that is all that it is.

He's not a genius. But he's a great football player. Best England has to offer along with Steven Gerrard. However, there are many better players in the World than Rooney. I would always pick Ronaldinho, Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo and few more in my team before Rooney. English media does not help by putting the whole expectation of the public on him. Ease the pressure and he may become a "Genius" in football terms!!

No I do not believe Wayne Rooney is overrated. I agree with most of your answers, I think he is still young enough to learn to control his temper and concentrate on doing what he does best (play Football), I just wonder how many people will put Wayne on a pedestal? If he does well in the run up and in EURO 2008.

I would not say he was either, but it's fact that he enjoys an inflated ego and therefore gets a real adrenaline rush when he is in good form. Which I suppose is the case of all good athletes. so there you have it he is a good athlete (good days & bad days).
I have no idea if you watch skating on ice, but I am amazed just how well all those taking part especially the two sports persons are performing. So I'm of the opinion that most true athletes can rise to the occasion. It does not make them a genius but just a good athlete.

Neither - he's a brilliant player, not overrated at all, but dumb as a post. On any other team he'd score more, but that is hard t do with CR out on wing. The way he owns the middle opens things up for CR (of course, same could be said for the width CR brings opening up the middle for WR).

I presume, that you wanted OPINIONS, my friend, - so, HERE'S MINE!
I'm NO fan, of either MANCHESTER UNITED, or EVERTON, - I never WILL BE, - but, even I can see, that, young Mr. Rooney DOES have an EXCEPTIONAL TALENT. Maybe, he IS over-rated, to SOME extent, - but, THAT has more to do with the MEDIA, than anything! Whichever way, you look at it, the FACT remains, that he, - most DEFINITELY, - has the MAKINGS of a footballing genius, - and, he's STILL, just a KID!

you mean the caveman that blew up like a toddler and put an end to our world cup 06?
Have you noticed how uncomfortable his name and genius look in the same sentence? Bit like 'Iraq' and 'desirable holiday destination'
A footballing genius needs to play not from his own perspective but from the teams. Rooney never had or ever will have this ability. Good footballer but will never be world class, or world cup winning material

he is an excellent footballer but i think calling im a genius or world class is over rating him a bit as he hasnt yet produced on the world stage although it was due to injury both times.
