Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) was a deaf-mute girl who wanted to fit in by having sex, i understand that but, what was with all that nudity?? i got that some of the scenes with her nude was becuase she was trying to turn on the men. but why was she on the balcony nude, crying, thinking, and then hugging her father (still nude)?? it was a good movie and she did a good job but, the nudity thing was a bit wierd for me.

The thing about the girl being nude is the fact that she sees no shame in being nude and you do. Put yourself in her place and then imagine her looking at you ther naked in that situation. What in the script says that the nudity had anything to do with sex? Like you say she is hugging her father at one point. What is the important part in that scene that she is clothed or that she is hugging her father, and; if the important part is that she is hugging her father then the fact she is naked is no point at all. Let's face it, by that point it is established that she is normally naked, not necessarily by choice but definitely by circumstances. Put the clothes on her and ask yourself, what if the next person she meets expects her to be naked, strategically what will she say about why she is clothed?.

First of all, I think she was desperate to feel wanted by a man. There are several scenes of her being rejected because she can't hear. And dealing with the death/suicide of her mother obviously had an impact on her as well. The nudity was more a stylistic choice by the director than something required by the story. But I think the fact she is still nude on the balcony is just to illustrate how emotionally numb she was. It might also have been a cry for help to get her father's attention.

It is not very clear what message the director wanted to communicate with the viewers. I feel that Chieko was the only witness to her mother's suicide. We were led to believe that the mother jumped from the balcony. The final moment when the father was hugging the naked child became clear that she actually shot herself. Perhaps Chieko was letting go of her emotional pain. The father wasn't very close to her & at that moment the barrier was broken.

I brought my Mat Saleh friends to Sungai Gabai once. You know what they wore? T-shirt and bermuda, nasib baik tak pakai tudung like most of Malaysian Muslims do. The orang putih always think that the way some Malaysians wear when sunbathing is peculiar. Malaysians be Malaysians lah

She had a traumatic experience, finding her mother after she shot herself in the head.

She had a distant relationship with her father, who was also trying to get over his wife's death.

She was also frustrated by her disability and her communication problem with boys who didn't sign.

She was a mentally distraught deaf teenager who sought to provoke men, and was very aggressive about it.

I see her nudity in the end as the ultimate provocation. Naked to the entire city. Men (luckily) never gave in to her provocations...(smart guys). Most women who provoke men that way are just wanting love, or physical contact in a loving (not-sexual) way.

She was still naked and in the balcony because she was contemplating suicide. Which also explains why she told the cop that that's how her mother killed herself.
