Is it also worth getting one with a sensor mat included, or one of the video ones? Our baby is due in May and we would like some opinions on which ones are considered the best :o)

First child I see!!

I would just buy a regular fisher price one with 2, yes 2 handsets. You can leave one in your room and carry the other!

Good luck!

I haven't actually used them yet, but I bought a babysensor monitor that has an alarm that goes off if your baby doesn't move/ breathe for 20 seconds. I also bought a BT digital baby monitor. I bought them from www.monitormybaby.com and there was £50 off the RRP if you bought both together.
I figured that I might as well get a good digital monitor. It has a room temp gauge, plays lullabies, has a 300m range and comes with a travel bag.
I wanted the sensor monitor because I would be totally paranoid otherwise and spend all my time leaning over the cot with a mirror to check if the baby was breathing!
The sensor can be used up to 1 year old.

Maybe I've spent too much, but I'd rather have too much technology than not enough!!!
I'm also expecting my first baby!

with my little girl i brought the angel care which had the sensor mat it cost around £50 i think from argos and i must say it was well worth it to get a good couple of hours sleep with the peace of mind but if you do get one with a mat dont forget to switch it off when you pick the baby up because it is very loud at 4 in the morning

Congratulations. My baby is 11 mths old now,we use the tomy deluxe, digital,it has 9 different sound settings,an imbuilt room thermometer,so you'll always know if you have to add or remove covers,it also has a soft night light to soothe baby, its very good, you can even hear baby breathing. We did get a video one,and they are good, but very distracting,we were always watching the monitor and not the tv,so we took it back, because you find yourself never relaxing, and when the baby is born you need time for just you and your partner. The tomy deluxe is about 60 pound, but worth it,good luck with the birth of your little one.

With my first child we had one of the first breathing sensors on the market bought for us by my sis who's friend's baby died of cot death.
We used it for our subsequent two children and I felt safer using it.
When I had my last baby Feb '06, the equipment was a bit 'dated' so we bought a TOMY movement sensor, with a sensor pad that goes under the mattress and an alarm that goes off if no movement is detected after 20 seconds.
It's worth it's weight in gold I can tell you! My baby girl was holding her breath and the alarm would keep going off. I'd run in and grab her, only for her to stir and calmly take a breath in!
I don't know why she was doing that, the docs said she was fine, but I dread to think what would happen if I hadn't bought the alarm.
Maybe nothing would happen, and she'd start breathing by herself again, but I will never take the risk.
If we have another baby, I'd get another alarm......

Hi there.

I used the Angel monitor with sensor mat included and I could not have picked better. Its surprising how nervous you become once your baby is born. Myself and my partner were constantly checking she was breathing in the first 2 weeks after she was born because I didnt yet have my monitor. It was absolutely fantastic once we got it and the tic (optionally) you can switch on lets you hear her breathing through a ticing sound. Fantastic for nervy mums and dads. You can use batteries or plug. Range very good also.

Fisher Price would be the best brand of moniter to get. You don't need to get a video moniter, but if you want to invest in one, it can be fun to watch the cute things your baby will do in the crib while you are not there :) Digital ones are definitely better than the the regualr ones - they won't get interference from nearby devices (phone, radio, etc.). If you have a large house and may not hear your baby in a few places, it would be good to get a moniter that has 2 receivers.

my brother and sister-in-law brought one with a sensor mat included and were very happy with it, just put there mind at rest a bit more, and boy are they sensitive mats to. it picked up my heartbeat just from lightly resting my hand on it and within 15seconds of removing my hand an alarm sounded. me personally i would go for the monitor with the sensor mat. im not sure where you are from but in australia the brand was angel care( something like that, i know it had angel in it).
