Certain bats have effective tails and certain bats have ineffective tails (non-functional) and certain bats dont have tails.

There is a webbing between their tails linked and their finger webbings (wings). Thus the tails are not prominent.

Tails are used as rudders (to turn in midflight) and for balance (while hovering and to maintain the required angle of flight) by bats and flying birds.

Check the source for more information.
