As far as I know (I could be wrong) BMW bikes are the ONLY bikes out there that use an external code reading device. Everything else uses self diagnostic features with no available code reader connection whatsoever. There are several aftermarket programable devices (such as power commander) that allow injection mapping changes, I don't think you can alter stock mapping on any bike without using one of these units.

Every manufacturer has a different procedure to read the codes.
Honda for example -
There's a 2 prong connector that has to be shorted together and the EFI light on the dash flashes at different speeds, a different # of times. Then you have to look up the code in the shop manual.

that is a real good question I would like to know the answere to.
I will say that you should take it to a certified repaire center and let the pros thake care of your problem
