The knocked a few pound off my bill and told me that I would go from basic to total broadband.
They gave me a new BTemail address which I don't use as I use a yahoo address.
I can't see any difference in terms of speed.
BT told me that the speed up would be automatic.
Am I doing something wrong?
I'm a bit of a newbie

In a matter of speaking these new packages that BT are offering sound a bit suspicious such as total broadband. They have tried to get me to change my contract and said they would lower my bills but they already have done so in an earlier occasion. As for speed.....a few years ago I changed my package from Pay as you go to BT Anytime plus. The plus included a modem which was free and was similar to broadband and fast but not the full speed. I use the broadband service and when I log on the connection is fast enough for me. In your position I would click on the desktop BT broadband help to check the connection speed.

Go to the following links and run a speed test on your line. That way you will know if your speed has been increased.

The speed increase is from BT to your modem and there should be no setting adjustments needed to be performed by you.

If the speed tests show that your internet speed is not near what you are supposed to be getting (minus about 10%-15% for overhead) then contact BT and let them know. An internet connection of 1.5Mbps should test out around 1.3Mbps, a 3Mbps connection should be around 2.6Mbps-2.8Mbps and a 6Mbps connection should be around 5.5Mbps.

You will really only notice the speed difference when it comes to downloading.

It also depends on the website you are looking at. You can have the fastest broadband in the world, but the loading rate is also determined on how fast they can pass the information to you.
