Marie and Pierre Curie were the discoverers of radium, which is a fission product of uranium. As such, they conducted the first experiments on Earth involving nuclear reactions. It was Marie, a Polish person, who figured out what was going on and she later named the element polonium after her country of origin.
She later died of radiation poisoning.

contrary to popular belief, it was actually lise meitner who was the first to discover nuclear fission. that otto guy is the one who is normally credited to that discovery, but he actually did very little in the whole process and stole the discovery from the jewish and female and german lise.
