I have a project due on thursday about new serial technology. Any info appreciated. laymans terms please.

Sata is faster than Pata.
SCSi is "small computer system interface" is more relible and faster then pata and sata.
SAS is better than scsi. scsi is a previous version of drives and SAS is newer and more faster.

One benefit the other answers are missing is that serial takes less lines, which cost less and takes up less space, which also helps in not restricting air flow and such. And this savings isn't just in the cabling it is also on the circuits that send and receive these signals, and in lots of cases the IC have got so small it is just the need to bring out the wires to the outside world the controls how big a package the IC is put in, so with less connections the IC package can be smaller, and if they are smaller then you can have smaller devices.

Serial wiring don't have the same crosstalk problem that parallel wiring have. That is the key point in serial technology.

SATA is Serial ATA it is connected to by a firewire & it,s many many times faster than Parellal ATA which is PATA.
