My best friend is very...well...it's hard to think of a word to describe her. Whenever something is wrong with her, she doesn't just complain about it once, get her sympathies, and move on, she'll just keep mentioning it and mentioning it till you no longer feel sorry for her, but rather, would like to knock her out so she'll stop talking about it. I love her to death but MY GOD why wont she just shut up and take a pill?! Anyone else have a friend like this?

*Friend*, no, but co-worker yes. She talks about her medical problems every day, throughout the day. Then I get to hear her say the same things to other people I work with, customers, etc. No matter how uninterested I try to look, she doesn't get the hint because she doesn't want too. She also for some reason keeps me informed about what she has to eat every day, and asks me about the nutritional content of various food...I am not a nutritionist!

Yes, I know people like that. I think they are looking for a solution for their problem and can't come up with it on their own. And they will absolutely talk it into the ground. Try telling her you are "so sorry I can't help you...let me get you a help line number."
Maybe she'll get the hint. Or just tell her the truth...she can't keep this complaining up because it really drags you down.

yes I do!!!

she writes me dozens of pages of emails about her problems daily. I pretend to read them but really just skim over them for a few seconds. Then I write something sympathetic like "I really feel for you, you sound depressed" without getting too specific.

best way to make the person stop is to bore them with your answers, like just keep saying, "that's terrible" and nodding, if they get less input they eventually wind down. And keep changing the subject.
