please? tnx!
a line from juliet
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee. Take all myself.

tnx. i really need it!!

They're saying that it's not the person that's the enemy, it's the fact that he's a Montague.

"O, be some other name!"

If he was Smith or a Jones then it would be okay to love him, but because he's a Montague it's not okay.

"that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet"

You can call something whatever you like, but it's still the same. Call a rose whatever you like, but it would still smell the same. Call him a Montague or some other name, but he's still the same person.

"Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee. "

Change his name, because he's not the person that she's supposed to hate.

Hope this helps :)

It simply means that you are the same person - no matter what your name is. If you had called yourself "Sally" instead of "vrules" - you'd still be the same person.

Romeo's family - and Juliets family hate each other. There is a fued. But the two of them have fallen in love. So - if Juliet went home and said "Hey, I'm dating a Montague" - her parents would go nuts -and tell her to stay away from him. BASED ON NOTHING MORE THAN ROMEO'S LAST NAME! So in this monologue - Juliet is talking about how stupid it is to be prejudiced against somebody just because of their name - their family name - because your name is NOT who you are. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" In other words - if the name for a rose was a pickle - what would be different? Only the name! It would still BE what it is. And if Romeo is a Montague - it's only a name. He's still a great guy. Then in the end of the monologue - she's telling him to just dump the name - so they can be together.

Ok so here's the deal. This Juliet chick is upset because her family hates the family of this dude Romeo. But see Juliet loves romeo and she wishes that she weren't a Montague so that she and romeo could be together. THe rose thing means that if you called a rose anything else, like bulldozer or whatever, then it would look exactly the same smell just as sweet just be a different name. get it so far? so if she weren't juliet she and romeo could love each other and no one would care

You do have some inkling of the basic story, do you? Two warring families, Montagues and Capulets.

Juliet is saying that although Romeo comes from the 'wrong' family, his name is not the important thing. It is not a real part of him, in the same way as his body is. He could call himself something else if he wished. Names are unimportantant - if you called a rose something else it would still be the same flower. And if Romeo was called someone else, he would still be the person she loves. She tells him to take off his name as if it were his hat.

It's only his name that keeps them apart. It's not a reflection of who he is as a person, but simply because of the family that he was born into that has caused the problems between them. He's perfect in her eyes, except for his name.

Juliet is lamenting the fact that if he were from any other family , then their union would be accepted and even welcomed.
