I thinking of getting the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on unit. Once its connected to the console, does the console actually have to be turned on in order to use the HD DVD unit or can you leave the console turned off and still use the DVD add on unit?

You will have to have the console on as well. The HD DVD player reads the disc, but it's the processors and stuff inside the 360 itself that need to be on to put the picture out to your TV.

Although the HD DVD Drive has its own power supply it only connects to the USB Port of the Xbox.
So you really have to have the console turned on, since the drive doesn't have any video connectors itself.

However, if the noise if of your concern: The loud disc drive of the console is turned off. And the air vents are very quiet.

HD-DVD and Blue Ray are a sparkling technologies with quite a few bugs. in spite of the undeniable fact that, wishing for Blue Ray and PS3 won't help, as working example the interactive good factors of the Pirates of the Caribbean Blue Ray won't artwork on some gamers. i think of, that throughout some days/ weeks/ months there must be a replace to the Xbox's participant application and your HD DVDs will artwork. i'm looking forward to getting warm Fuzz, too. That action picture grow to be astounding! And related to Sony no longer dealing BS: they're coming up BR+. a sparkling Blue Ray format it extremely is meant to have good factors that are already availiable on HD DVD (image in image working example). in spite of the undeniable fact that, contemporary Blue Ray gamers would be no longer able to apply those new BR+ good factors. apart from: If some hacker shows a thank you to tear a Blue Ray Disc with the PS3's Linux working example, the action picture marketplace can positioned revocation keys on new Blue Ray discs. in case you place any such disc into the PS3, the PS3 (as the different Blue Ray participant, too) is asked to keep the revocation key in it extremely is everlasting memory. this way the PS3 can not play any Blue Ray video clips anymore. no longer even your previous video clips you already offered. *That* is what I call BS.

you can connect it to a pc if you want. Here is what I did and it works:

1. install the drivers in your pc first.

2. connect the hd dvd drive to your pc

3. Install the newest version of Power DVD (it has HD Dvd support).

and you can watch HD DVD movies through your media center. It is important you do the three steps in the exact order or you will have problems. Do not connect the player to the pc before you install the drivers and do not install the newest version of Power DVD until you connect the player.

Is the drive powered by USB? If there is no power cable you might assume the xbox had to be switched on.
