Johnny Appleseed or Tom Sawyer would be real easy, and cute.

Dracula or Frankenstein would be cool. Or Conan the Barbarian (Robert E. Howard was a great author). Sherlock Holmes would also be a good character. What about something Shakespearian? Romeo? Or just watch League of Extrodinary Gentlemen. All of those characters are major literary personalities.

Harry Potter springs to mind - but they will probably be pretty popular. So what about; peter pan; mogli; tarzan; robin hood; batman - the list is endless and they're all pretty easy to make you just need some imagination. Good luck & have fun xx

If you are able, what would be easier than making a costume is renting one. I'm sure there will be a costume hire shop near to you.
If you have to make your own: Julius Caesar (toga and bay leave wreath), or a Hobbit (great coat, waistcoat, pointy ears and fake feet).

lol. The first thing that came ot my head was James and the Giant Peach. If u can find a giant peach...
or Sinbad or Aladdin they are classics so there may not be as many of those as Harry Potters.

How about a Hobbit?
Roll up some trousers to just below the knee, put some fake hair on his feet and get a cheap pair of braces (for over the shoulder) and a cane pipe (*not* with tobacco in it ;o) and you're done!

The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland - he can wear a man's sport coat, big hat, turned up collar and loud old tie.
