Never even ever thought about it! But I think I'd prefer to wait till after the baby is safely born. Although every pregnancy was fine for me you never know what might go wrong and I'd hate to have had a party like that for things to have turned out a heartbreak. Who organises it anyway? The mother or friends? I think I'd be too embarrassed to ask friends around before hand - I prefer folk giving because they want to of their own free will and not because they've been invited to beforehand! But it's a personal opinion and everyone is different!
In the time it's taken me to type, another 2 answers have popped up! If it's all about just having a get together then that's great - I have done that every week for 7 years since some friends and I were all pregnant at the same time so we have always had a 'last get together' before we've gotten to our dates. But it's all fun and chat and no presents till afterwards.

I think English people would find it strange. In the UK people give gifts once the baby has arrived and might feel a bit put out to be asked for gifts before seeing the baby.
If you are going to do it, get a friend to organise it. That's the way it's done in the States and organising it yourself just looks greedy.

I'm going to have one, but it won't be too like the American ones - no games etc. Just me and some of my best friends getting together for some drinks (non-alcoholic for me!) and some nibbles and chat. It will be my last chance to do that for a while. It's going to be held in a nice cafe in central London.
