Although liberation theologists were called to Rome to express their belief to Cardinal Ratzinger, they were not censured. The problem was that Cardinal Ratzinger thought that liberation theology espoused "acceptable" violence in pursuit of it's goals. There were several priests and nuns who had joined our praised violent means of overthrowing despicable regimes. When the true meaning of Liberation Theology was explained in Rome it got a modest approval.

Oscar Romero demonstrated Liberation Theology by siding with the poor and dispossed in El Salvador, instead of siding with the rich and powerful. Because of the church's position in Central and South America, which had been on the side of the power structure, in fact was part of the power structure, this was a radical departure.

Oscar Romero died for his belief in Christ. He was shot while celebrating Mass. He was the first priest since Thomas a Beckett to have been killed on the altar.

Oscar Romero, Leonardo Boff and others are true believers of liberation theology. They demonstrated the said theology in voicing out their disgust against the government officials through writing books, homilies, seminars and open forums. That is why even the Catholic hierarchy was shocked that Leonardo Boff was censured by former Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI).
