I read this book and the two that follow it, The Lost Boy and Privileged Youth I think...I cry each time I read it too...I read it to my son who is kind of young (9) but I thought he should have a listen to what the world can be like sometimes, maybe let him see his life in a different light..I think that mother was horrible, and there was no rhyme or reasons to actions, choices, or behavior...Makes me feel like people should get licensed before being able to procreate. It is nothing short of a miracle that David turned out to be such a fine human being after being treated like a dog, or less, for such a long time. So at the same time it made me sad it gave me hope as well.

I read both of them (or maybe it was like 3 of them, from the same author about his life) and LOVED them. Even though it has been a long time since I read them I still love them and talk about thme. It also made me cry, and the whole time I spent reading it all I could think was..."Is this woman crazy how could you "love" your child one min. and the next treat him like this?" Anyway if I were you KEEP the book!!!! You may end up getting board but wiil want to read it again.

If that book touched you, look into Torey Hayden--she has written a half-dozen similar novels (about children who have been abused and/or have disabilities). I've been teaching special ed. for 15 years & her books were part of the reason I went into it. The author of A Child Called It (I think it's David Peltier) has written other books as well.

Yes, I read it several years ago, and I cried while I read it, because I too had been abused as a child, though not as badly as this boy, so I felt sympathy for him. It was a terribly sad story.

I have read it and all his books and also followed him on several Oprah shows. It is just heart wrenching to know that kind of abuse actually exist .I also let my kids read it so that they can see how good they have it in our home.
