The Prize? How about not having to worry about being bombed? No planes flying into buildings, no suicide bombers or car bombs taking people out. Not having to hear about US and allied troops being killed. Man you are dense!

Quote
The Taliban, under the direction of Mullah Muhammad Omar, brought about this order through the institution of a very strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law. Public executions and punishments (such as floggings) became regular events at Afghan soccer stadiums. Frivolous activities, like kite-flying, were outlawed. In order to root out "non-Islamic" influence, television, music, and the Internet were banned. Men were required to wear beards, and subjected to beatings if they didn't.
Most shocking to the West was the Taliban's treatment of women. When the Taliban took Kabul, they immediately forbade girls to go to school. Moreover, women were barred from working outside the home, precipitating a crisis in healthcare and education. Women were also prohibited from leaving their home without a male relative—those that did so risked being beaten, even shot, by officers of the "ministry for the protection of virtue and prevention of vice." A woman caught wearing fingernail polish may have had her fingertips chopped off. All this, according to the Taliban, was to safeguard women and their honor.

We are fighting the Taliban to let everyone know that we will not tolerate attack.
The prize is pure satisfaction and a world where countries think twice before attacking us.
We will win, because we are not fighting Afghans. We are fighting foreign Mujaheddin who took control of Afghanistan. Afghans will support us, as long as we leave when the job is done, and treat civilian casualties like our own.
So maybe America should stay out, and let NATO continue it's good work.
Iraq is completely different.

Officially, it is because htey had some sort of unacceptable alliance with Al Qaeda (offering them refuge). But surely part of the thinking was that the politicians' wives would thank them (for freeing the enslaved Afghan housewives), and that their campaign funding corporate partners could move in and expand their profits with a big presence there too.

Well we're not really after a prize per se. More so that we're trying to get rid of the Taliban so they can't instigate any more terrorist attacks on the UK and US. It's also to remove them from Iraq so that the cruelty and repression should end.

Good question. It seems such a remote country, and these are the people who should be earning the money and working the land. OK we don't like their beliefs, that girls shouldn't be educated, no music etc., but there must be degrees of these beliefs, some more extreme than others, and I fail to see how killing off a generation of Dads and wage-earners is going to benefit anyone. Surely education and helping them to lift themselves out of poverty is a better way?

You don't say which side the victory, why do you think the government are insisting that children learn Arabic in school now.
