In my mind it came down to bad teamwork, and lousy coaching decisions. Starting Ronaldo instead of Robinho was dumb. Ronaldo looked like he was overweight, not just slightly over playing weight. Robinho is going to be a huge very soon. The team also did not play well together. The passes all looked sloppy. This was not at all the same team that won in 2002.

They were too arrogant and didn't anticipate France's teamwork.
And Ronaldo was not in his peak condition.
