I think having enthusiasm for teaching and letting that show in the classroom inspires students to be more interested in learning themselves. Inspiring students means spending a lot of time preparing varied lessons with student interests in mind so that they become engaged in experimenting with the ideas. Any teacher who relies to much on one method of instruction becomes stale.

One skill I have learned is, and if you can master it you will do well as a teacher - leave your ego "outside the door" when you go into a classroom. The class is not about you, unless the students ask about you. The class is about the students, and what they do and think. Sometimes you can stroke the students' egos, if it helps create a good learning environment. There are many other things a teacher needs to be, but I wanted to stress this basic rule for being a teacher.

We define basic skills as:

The ability to read, write and speak in English / Welsh and to use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general.

The Basic Skills Agency is a small, responsive, independent organisation, working with its funders, the Department for Education and Skills and the Welsh Assembly Government. It is a not-for-profit organisation and a charity.

Over its 30 years, the Basic Skills Agency has identified, developed and disseminated innovation and knowledge in basic skills teaching and learning as well as managing large scale contracts. It works as part of a wide and complex network of providers and users in England and Wales. It is also recognised by its key stakeholders as a credible and independent centre of expertise and thinking. Each year we produce a delivery plan setting out our activity for the year.

The Innovation and Development activity in England is developed in four sectors:

• Adult including projects for the Army and Financial Literacy
• 14-19
• Family
• Schools including the Quality Mark.
