The death penalty system is already extremely flawed. Why would we want to make it worse?

As you probably already know, over 120 people have been released from death row, with evidence that they were wrongfullly convicted. You may also know that in a number of cases suspected child molestation, innocent people were convicted and sent to prison, for long terms, because the children had been manipulated into accusing them of things they did not do.

Here are some other verifiable and sourced facts about the death penalty. Keep in mind that there is an alternative for those who commit really horrible crimes.

Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. Many had already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person we are not likely to find that out and, also, the real criminal is still out there.

Re: DNA
DNA is available in no more than 10% of murder cases. It is not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.

Re: Appeals
Our appeals system is designed to make sure that the trial was in accord with constitutional standards, not to second guess whether the defendant was actually innocent. It is very difficult to get evidence of innocence introduced before an appeals court.

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.) As you may also know, sex offenders, particularly those who molest children, are rarely "curable" and they are not likely to be deterred by the death penalty.

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge or an eye for an eye mentality.

You are taking 'emotional murder' as justification of physical murder (I'm being generous and disregarding the flawed claim that people die emotionally). Your logic allows children to punch anyone that insults them. If little Jimmy says to Norm, "You're dumb," that causes Norm some emotional damage. With your reasoning, Norm could fight back with physical damage, going so far as to break Jimmy's nose after time.

The death penalty operates on the perverted alternative to the Golden Rule: "Treat others the way they treat others." The true 'Golden Rule' states "Treat others the way you want to be treated." Live by that rule, not the alternative. People can't preach one thing and do another. Lead by example not by exclamations. If you don't want someone to kill you, then don't support the killing of others. That's the Golden Rule in action.

I am not sure why...but I do think that it should be enacted into law. I think that if a person betrays, preys or beguiles a child with violation, perversion, fear or otherwise...they should automatically forfeit their rights to life.
With that being said...those bastards are sick enough to continue to do such things and the only thing that will come from a death sentence threat is more children being murdered.
I do agree....we need a solution. Too bad vigilantism is not allowed.

first of all, there are ways to recover from these tragedies. the scar may always be there, but yes, there will always be recovery -- if the victim is open to it.

murdering someone, physically, doesnt have a cancel, delete, or repair button. once its done, you can never try the person again, if maybe he or she is sick in the head or whatever.

lastly, nothing gives another man the right to take the life of another. who says that murder justifies murder?

i think it makes you just like the original criminal.

i dunno i been saying foreve the penalties are not nearly harsh enough. I think two convictions = bullet in the bead. only two because one could be a lie or error. Every time i dela with the justice system it becomes perfectly clear has extremely flawed it is.

i think of all newborn molesters could be positioned to sleep! i'm conscious that should get rid of a great ingredient of the human race, yet think of roughly it, anybody left may well be so scared they probable does no longer do it. As for each man or woman else, in the event that they dedicated the crime, are got here upon responsible and are worried of dying then i think of they must be positioned to sleep. enable them to experience the phobia of dying in basic terms like their sufferers. in the event that they're waiting to die then i think of we ought to consistently shop them alive in penal complex. And once I say penal complex, I propose one meal an afternoon, no t.v., no air con, no gyms (in basic terms to lead them to larger! it extremely is stupid), no privileges in any respect. Prisoners now and back say, "they handle us like animals", nicely i think of in the event that they did no longer act like animals they does no longer be in there interior the 1st place. i think of they ought to artwork yet in basic terms to pay for his or her outfits, food, facility expenditures, and pay a small ingredient extensive-unfold to the sufferers or their families. That way extensive-unfold they're reminded of why they're in there! I do think of the fee could bypass to a financial enterprise account the place the sufferers are no longer reminded daily of the journey. That way they might handle it on their own whilst they're waiting. i individually do agree the only time they ought to apply the dying penalty is whilst they comprehend for particular they dedicated the crime. As for criminals who extremely did no longer bodily harm absolutely everyone i think of they ought to place them in a penitentiary removed from the no longer undemanding-middle criminals, yet I nevertheless think of they ought to artwork for each thing.
