A fruit is a growth on a plant that surrounds its seed with a pulpy mass. The fruit is often good to eat, which attracts animals and birds to consume the fruit and either drop the seed at a location away from the original plant or eliminate the seeds in feces. In fact, some seeds have evolved in such a way that they do not sprout unless they have passed through the digestive tract of an animal, stripping away a hard outer shell so that the seed can sprout in fresh manure.
