You don't actually need an agent (though I did have one when I published my first book). You can submit your book directly to publishers.

You can pick up a copy of the Writer's Market 2007 in any bookstore and most libraries. It will tell you all you need to know to get a book to the right people.

Go to the reference section of a bookstore or library. You should be able to find a book that lists literary agents and what types of books they represent (this info is probably also online but I'm not exactly sure where to look.) Generally they'll want you to send them a quick explanation of what the book is about (essentially a one page sales pitch) and a short excerpt from the book. A literary agents website should give you info about exactly what they want. Good luck!

Get yourself a copy of "Writers Market", it's available at just about any large scale book store like Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. The book has plenty of up to date articles on choosing the right agent, what they cost, submission letters, etc, etc. For a freelance writer (even one with an agent) it is an indispensable tool.

write a synopsis of your story...and keep it short.
tell the agent where you think your story will find a market.
tell the agent why you think your story will make an impact.
give the agent a sample of your writing.
keep it all terse and interesting.
good luck
