If there were the perfect crime, it's highly unlikely for us to ever hear about it. We'd hear the story if the criminal got caught, and that made it an imperfect crime.

DB Cooper robbed a bank and hasn't been caught yet. Of course, people are looking for him, so he can't live openly as himself. I am not sure I would consider that the perfect crime. I think perfect would mean no one knew you did it, and you didn't care (had no guilt, nor fear of discovery).

Crime of the century?
I think the perpatrator was locked up- but only during trial- where he was found not guilty (though he was) but I am not sure... I might have mixed the plot up...
